Case narrative
Sting
Vincent Roop crying at the thought of going to jail.
The decoy told Roop to walk into the front door when he got there, but Roop accidentally tried going into the garage door first. He arrived to the sting with a shirt that had a large picture of actress Nia Peeples on it. When Chris Hansen came out, Roop headed toward the door to escape but Chris blocked it. Roop then started becoming hysterical and yelling, "I'm sorry! Don't do nothing to me, please!" While Chris was repeatedly telling him to sit on the couch, Roop began crying, hyperventilating, and pleading with Chris and police to not hurt him. Chris tried to calm him down, but Roop pointed at police and said, "They're going to hurt me!"
After Chris asked him how he got into the situation that day, Roop responded, "I drove here." Roop claimed that he did not know the decoy's age. Chris asked what would have happened had the situation not been a sting, to which Roop said, "Something bad, maybe? Is-is that a right answer?" He then said that he probably would have had sex. Chris told Roop that he was "a grown ass man." This overwhelmed Roop and he tried touching Chris Hansen's shoulder before bending down and attempting to cry in Chris Hansen's lap before being told to sit back up. Roop again expressed that he was scared, but Chris responded that he was also scared "because I'm talking to someone who's a sexual predator." Roop then said that he wanted to die. Chris asked questions about what Roop had or had not brought to the house, but Roop's answers were simply, "Okay." He repeatedly answered Chris' yes or no questions with "okay" throughout the interview.
Roop stated that he came to the house because he was scared. Chris Hansen told him that showing up because he was scared did not make any sense. Roop said, "of course I woke up this morning," but that he got online because he did not have anything else to do. Chris asked if Roop could have just pet his cat or gone for a walk instead. Roop insisted several times that he did, in fact, pet his cat that morning, but did not go for a walk because it was raining.
Roop stated that he wanted to go home and promised that he would never do it again. When Chris asked how he could promise that, Roop said that he could give Chris his phone. Chris said that he could simply go get another phone, but Roop responded, "No, I can't. I give you my phone... and I won't have a phone anymore." Deputies then arrested Roop while he screamed at them to not hurt him. They led Roop to an awaiting police vehicle while he continued to yell, "I'm never going home!
