Case narrative

Confrontation

Instead of an actual child, Chris Hansen welcomes Steven to the sting house. Steven insists that he was aware that he had entered a sting operation. He argues that he went to the residence to check what was happening and is often "suspicious." Steven admits to Chris that he has children and says he just wanted to take the girl to a movie. After Chris exposes him on national television, Steven leaves the house and says he doesn't permit them to put him on television. Since this was Dateline NBC's first investigation into online sexual predators, local law enforcement did not conduct a parallel investigation. Steven was, therefore, never charged with a crime.

Trivia

A fan who traced where he lived revealed his last name. Some footage of Reddington that wasn't shown in the episode was later uncovered in a previously unnoticed bonus episode called "In Our Own Words." While the footage technically isn't uncut, these two clips and other clips featuring Eddie and DarkHero73 are the only pieces of bonus footage from the Bethpage sting to be officially released. However, an uncut version of DarkHero's interview without the facial blur was available online. Additionally, a text sample of Reddington's unaired footage was found.
