Case narrative

Sting

Stanley arrives to the bust house on November 2, the first night of the sting. The decoy, played by Dan Schrack , stands on the steps and delivers his iconic line, "How ya doin' Stanley?" After some little discussion between the two, Chris Hansen emerges. In addition to apologizing, Stanley alleges that he understood it was a setup and that he felt it was a "joke." When Chris asks why he knew it was a setup, Stanley reveals that the reason he knew it was a setup was it was to catch people who go after children for sex. He continues by saying that it was his first time ever meeting a child online. Stanley admits to teaching math in a junior high school.

Chris asks Stanley if he ever had inappropriate conversations with kids. Stanley replies that he has successfully taught for 23 years and denies having ever done so. Stanley acknowledges that he has four children that he hasn't seen in a long time. Chris asks Stanley if he'd be fine with an adult man wanting to meet his kids, and Stanley replies that he wouldn't. Afterward, he claims he was unaware that the boy was thirteen. Later, Stanley brought up the subject of religion, saying that "the part of [him] that's Christian" would persuade the child against having sex. Chris then humorously questioned whether his sexually explicit conversation was in the Old Testament or New Testament.

When Chris reveals that he is a Dateline NBC reporter and the cameras start rolling, Stanley apologizes yet again, says he has again "learned his lesson," thanks Chris for helping him, and calls himself an "excellent teacher." After leaving the home, police officers command Stanley to the ground, and then arrest him. Police search his car and find MapQuest directions to the sting house. He was photographed, book, and brought in for questioning.

Arrest and police interview

Stanley admits during his police interview that he is extremely anxious and that being arrested could "ruin" him. Although Stanley believes he had a "gut feeling" it was wrong, he persisted in the online conversation since he believed the boy wasn't thirteen. Stanley reiterates his claim that he is an "excellent teacher" and that he doesn't want to be fired. He states that his principal is going to be "so shocked" when they find out about his arrest.

Following his arrest, Stanley was brought before Judge Kathy Hayden, who set his bail at $50,000. He was placed on administrative leave.

Post-TCaP

The Texas Education Agency would later permanently revoke Stanley's teaching license. In an interview, Stanley stated, "TEA pulled my license when they really didn't have grounds to but they did and I let it happen because I didn't have money to fight it. Teachers don't make a lot of money in Texas."

In 2013, Stanley moved back to Warsaw, Indiana, where he settled at Rattington Circle. That year, the state issued him a substitute license. In 2014, a person from Argos saw him on To Catch a Predator and notified Plymouth Schools. When the person notified Plymouth Schools' administration, it was discovered that Stanley had been a substitute teacher for multiple Indiana school districts. Stanley was due to fill in at Penn-Harris-Madison, so Plymouth immediately called P-H-M as they both utilize the same online substitute teaching tool. They explained he was removed from their system and that he would never work at the schools again.

According to company spokeswoman Jill Spencer, because Stanley has never been convicted of a crime, has never been charged with a crime against a minor, and is not a registered sex offender, he never lied on any of the documents he filled out at P-H-M. Safe Hiring Solutions conducted a criminal background check on Stanley in January 2014. The charges against him did not appear on his background check because they were ultimately dropped as he was not prosecuted. His Indiana license was the subject of a complaint, and state authorities looked into it. According to Indiana documents, Stanley and the state agreed and signed a voluntary license revocation in November 2014.

While his health was deteriorating, he spent his final years online conversing with men, including the infamous decoy "realtor named Craig." He would be absolutely fearless and flamboyant in his advances, telling his catfishes, "Daddy's thirsty".

Trivia

He had since indicated that he had no interest in women to his catfishers. Stanley was thought to be dead years before his actual death due to another Dateline story entitled “Murder in the Hollywood Hills” which had in its synopsis a man named Stanley Kendall who had killed himself. Stanley would operate in the last years of his life under the belief that Chris Hansen was also caught in a sting exposing him as a child predator, believing Chris' affair with a thirty-year-old NBC affiliate reporter to be a child sex sting.
