Reviewed sting-related legal outcome. The 2011 six-month failure-to-register sentence is separate and excluded. Registry disappearance does not establish completed registration. Paragraph 6 of the actual appellate opinion confirms seven months imprisonment; additional probation and financial conditions remain wiki-reported, so the combined sentence is not given a blanket court-record basis. Biography
Ronnelle Stephens-Tun was involved in the military, specifically the Navy. He lived in Fort Wayne, Indiana at the time of the sting.
Aftermath
Stephens-Tun was charged with one count of Attempted Unlawful Sexual Conduct with a Minor. Stephens-Tun consistently arrived late for all of his court appearances, settlement hearings, and appointments. During his trial, Stephens-Tun and his lawyer used the defense that he was entrapped by NBC. A jury of twelve people took an hour and a half to reach a unanimous verdict that found him guilty of the charge in March of 2007. After failing to attend his sentencing, Stephens-Tun had to be detained in Indiana and taken to Ohio. He was sentenced to 7 months in jail, probation, pay a fee of $250, restitution for investigation costs of $1477.34, witness expenses of $1012, and was labeled a sexually oriented offender.
Stephens-Tun appealed his sentence in 2008, arguing that there was insufficient evidence to justify his conviction. He further argued that the trial court improperly gave the jury instructions on the entrapment defense. He asserted that the evidence supported a finding that he just meant to "party" with the decoy rather than the exclusive conclusion that he wanted to meet her for sex. Stephens-Tun's appeal was denied after there was evidence that found that he attempted to have sexual conduct with a minor. In 2011, Stephens-Tun was arrested for failing to register as a sex offender. He was sentenced to 6 months in jail. Stephens-Tun was not placed back on the Indiana Sex Offender Registry, and at some point, his profile on the Hawaii Sex Offender Registry was removed. With that, it is safe to assume Stephens-Tun was eventually removed from the sex offender's register after completing his required term.
2024 update
Chris Hansen did an episode of his Predators I've Caught podcast where he talked about Stephens-Tun.
Trivia
Like Stephen Buchanan , Stephens-Tun has been accused of "stolen valour" by a member of the TCaP community who was in the military. According to them, due to the severe and psychologically damaging nature of the Iraq War, no one who was deployed "two of three times" would be so mundane and "chill" as Stephens-Tun was when talking about his service, and they wouldn't say "two or three times" when talking about deployment, being much more likely to specifically remember how many times they were deployed into such violent action. Stephens-Tun's Predator Raw entry contains extremely misleading editing. For example, his uncut interview shows that his exposure to the cameramen takes place immediately after he admits to having seen the show before being caught, as well as numerous other inconsistencies.
