Case narrative
Aftermath
Following his arrest, Brummit faced a single count of attempted unlawful sexual conduct with a minor, which was classified as a fourth-degree felony. On November 8, 2006, he entered a guilty plea in relation to the felony charge. Subsequently, on January 8, 2007, Brummit was sentenced to two months in jail with credit given for two days already served, was placed under community control for a period of two years, and was required to register as a sexually oriented offender for a duration of ten years. As part of his sentence, Brummit was mandated to complete forty hours of community service and participate in psychotherapy treatment aimed at reducing the risk associated with sex offenses. This treatment was to be carried out through an approved agency.
He was also forbidden from possessing any pornographic images and was required to abstain from alcohol and the use of illegal drugs. In addition, he had to comply with DNA sampling and undergo random drug testing. The financial obligations accompanying his sentence included paying court costs, a fee of $500 for sex offender risk evaluation and treatment, as well as the recommended costs of prosecution amounting to $1,477.34. Furthermore, Brummit was expected to actively seek and maintain employment. Failure to comply with the terms of his community control could have resulted in the imposition of more stringent sanctions and a potential one-year prison sentence. Brummit successfully completed his community control in 2010 and was removed from the sex offender registry in either 2018 or 2019.

Although they are currently lost, Brummit's very brief interview with Hansen and his police interrogation were available in uncut form on the MSNBC subscription service.
