Case narrative
Confrontation with Chris Hansen
Upon arriving at the sting house, instead of encountering an actual child, Kline found himself conversing with Del Harvey , who was posing as the teenage girl from another room. They engaged in casual conversation until Chris Hansen entered the room to confront Kline. Caught off guard, Kline resorted to a ludicrous excuse, claiming that he had stopped by the sting house to inform the girl that he wouldn't be able to make it due to prior plans of coherence.
Kline provided an additional explanation, stating that he intended to inform the girl that he wouldn't be able to meet at the house for a while due to preexisting commitments and other plans.
However, when Hansen revealed his true identity and the presence of cameras to expose him, instead of attempting to flee, Kline extended his hand and shook Hansen's. Astonishingly, Kline stated that he saw no issue with coming to the house solely to make a new friend. Kline attempted to salvage his credibility by claiming he had pondered the situation "long and hard" and had no intention of engaging in any inappropriate behavior with the supposed girl. In a final handshake, Kline bid farewell to Hansen and exited the sting house. However, his departure was short-lived as he was swiftly apprehended by the Darke County police and taken into custody.
Police interview
During his police interrogation, Kline offered an explanation for his presence at the house. He stated that his intention was to inform the girl that he couldn't engage in any sexual activity with her and that their interaction would be limited to hanging out. Kline admitted that the girl was 13 years old and shared aspiration to study criminal justice classes in college. He also acknowledged having another 13-year-old female friend in Cleveland but denied ever visiting her or engaging in any sexual encounters. According to Kline, he went to the sting house solely for the purpose of hanging out, as he had some free time before meeting his friends.
He claimed that he and the girl planned to have conversations and watch movies together. When questioned about explicit images involving children, Kline denied possessing any, but he mentioned that his brother had downloaded child pornography and bestiality images. Kline claimed that he had taken the responsibility to delete those files. However, the detectives expressed doubt about his statement, considering his decision to travel to the sting house with the intention of engaging with someone he believed to be a child. Kline admitted that he had driven over two hours solely to spend time talking with the girl, despite being aware of her alleged age.
Aftermath
After being arrested, Kline faced a felony charge of attempted unlawful sexual conduct with a minor. Opting for a trial, he went through the legal proceedings and was subsequently found guilty. In the autumn of 2006, Kline received his sentencing, which included a one-month jail term, two years of community control, ordered to register as a sexually oriented offender for a period of ten years, and he was mandated to complete forty hours of community service. Any violation of these terms would carry severe consequences, potentially resulting in a sentence of up to eight years in prison. In addition to the aforementioned penalties, Kline was also required to attend psychotherapy and undergo sex offender counseling and therapy. Furthermore, as part of his sentencing, Kline was ordered to pay restitution. The amount of $1,477 was assigned as restitution, along with an additional $2,289 to cover the costs associated with bringing in witnesses for the trial.
After being removed from the registry and completing his probation and therapy, Kline relocated to Kentucky and married a woman from the Dominican Republic.
