Biography
Rob lies about his age and says he is forty when he was really forty-nine. He tries to persuade the decoy to leave his house. The decoy later suggests that they meet at the sting house. Rob was considered a "fast mover", as it just took him an hour and thirteen minutes from when he contacted the decoy to arriving at the sting house. Since the sting house was close to where Rob lived, he rode his bike. He is greeted by twenty-one-year-old Dan Schrack , who is pretending to be a thirteen-year-old boy. When entering the house, Rob asks him what he wants to do. Dan says he is going to go into the hot tub and asks Rob if he wants to join him. Rob agrees, which causes Dan to ask if he wanted to take his clothes off first.
Rob then becomes reluctant, saying he is not comfortable doing it because of the decoy's age. Chris Hansen later comes out and confronts Rob. He wants to know about Rob's plan, to which Rob replies, "just cruising around". Then Chris questions his age. He describes himself as being between "thirty-five to forty," to which then Chris asks if he doesn't know the exact age. Rob then asserts that he is forty. Chris asks Rob about the age of the boy he had come to meet. Rob repeatedly claims that he believed the boy to be eighteen and that the age was indicated on his profile. Rob then stops the questioning and bolts out of the house. He attempts to escape but is arrested by Long Beach police officers.
Aftermath
Rob was found guilty on one count of Attempted Lewd or Lascivious Acts with a Child Under 14 Years of Age. He was unable to make bail, he spent three months in jail, got three years of probation, one year of paid treatment, sixty days of picking up roadside trash in California, and a lifetime registration as a sex offender. In 2015, Rob was arrested for impersonating and harassing a police officer. He pleaded no contest and was sentenced to 3 years probation and a criminal protective order. As of July 2022, Rob was in violation of his sex offender registry as was listed as being absconded.
In 2024, Joey discovered a Grindr profile for Culbertson, although it is unknown if he still uses it. He is still listed as absconded as of April 2025.
