Case narrative

Biography

He had a two-year-old and a five-year-old child at the time. According to public voter records, Taylor is a registered Democrat, but there does not seem to be any record of him voting after 2013. Taylor has a lengthy criminal history, but it almost entirely consists of minor offenses such as trespass, possession of marijuana, and many traffic and license charges.

Sting

Taylor had been communicating with a decoy posing as a fifteen-year-old girl. He also planned to bring marijuana and condoms to the house.

Taylor took a public bus to the neighborhood and walked the rest of the distance to the sting house. During the trip, he walked only a few feet beside a police surveillance vehicle, not recognizing it. The decoy Taylor had been talking to was presented as a black female. However, the decoy at the house was white. Therefore, deputies took Taylor into custody once he got to the door so as not to alert him. Deputies interviewed him first before passing it off to Chris Hansen .

When Chris started to ask questions, a visibly frustrated Taylor said that there was nothing more to say and objected to the cameras recording him. To prove this, he pointed to the fact that he did not bring condoms, only marijuana. Taylor asserted that he only wanted to smoke marijuana with the minor girl because he was in a rush to get home to his kids.

Taylor told him that the children's mother was planning to drop them off at his house later that day because she had to work. Chris noted the irony of Taylor not being at home to meet his kids and instead being at the sting house to met another child. Taylor asked for the interview to stop so that he could go to jail.

Taylor, through the questioning, looked away and did not answer. He later stated that everything he did was a mistake, but that smoking marijuana makes him talkative, which is why he might have done it. He also claimed that him not bringing condoms is evidence of not having any intent to have sex. However, Chris noted that it is possible for a person to have sex without a condom. Taylor, ironically considering he has children, said that he is not the kind of person to have sex without a condom.

Taylor grew even more frustrated by the repeating conversation and demanded to speak with the deputy in charge so that he could go to jail and end the interview. He also stated that he knew who Chris Hansen was and had seen the show before.

Aftermath

Ricard Taylor was charged with: Importuning, Possession of Criminal Tools, and Disseminating Matter Harmful to Juveniles. In a plea agreement, Possession of Criminal Tools and Disseminating Matter Harmful to Juveniles were dropped and Taylor pled guilty to Importuning. He was sentenced to five years of probation and is a registered Tier I Sex Offender in Ohio.
