Case narrative

Biography

Avalos was formerly a permanent resident of the U.S. who had obtained citizenship in 1990.

Sting

Avalos drove to the house, IMing the decoy via video and text while on his way there, showing her via webcam that while driving to the sting house, he was going in excess of 100 mph to get there. He showed up in the backyard with bags of groceries along with the webcam, chuckling to the decoy about what he had brought over when Chris Hansen comes out and confronts him. Norberto shakes his hand and Hansen gets down to business asking about the webcam he brought, Norberto thinks Hansen is the girl’s father, saying he brought it for his daughter in order to see her face. Hansen also gets Norberto to cop to bringing condoms, but tries to play it off by saying he always carries them and he’d never have sex with someone her age. Finally, Hansen reveals that Norberto has walked into his investigation which has him apologetic, but still maintains he wouldn’t do anything with a girl her age and wouldn’t seduce her in person, despite what he typed online. Norberto grabs his groceries and starts to leave when he is ambushed in the garage and arrested by Petaluma Police.

During his questioning, Norberto continued to deny his intentions and when questioned on his laptop with porn on it, he slips a little when the officer says they would have ended up having sex if the watched the porn. Norberto replies, “Well yeah, probably…” but quickly backtracks asking the officer how he could do that to a kid.

Avalos would be found guilty of Attempted Lewd and Lascivious Contact With a Minor and sentenced to three years in prison. Additionally, he was charged for entering the country illegally, received an additional three years and ten months, and was deported once again upon completion of his sentence.

Trivia

His uncle, who initially brought him to the United States, loaned Norberto money to start an auto shop in Mexico.
