Reviewed sting-related legal outcome. The ten-year statutory maximum is not imposed. Saved one-page police arrest report is not a sentencing judgment. Original arrest allegations and later reduced conviction are different charging stages; not three sustained convictions. Original individual dispositions unknown. The arrest form lists a total of four crimes without allocating them, while the archive describes one count of each initial offense; exact initial quantities are left unknown.
Case narrative
Sting and Arrest
Upon arriving at the sting house, Murray didn't realise that Chris Hansen was already mid-conversation with Jeremy Keister after eighteen-year-old actress and decoy Casey Mauro ushered him inside; he was seen carrying a bag of McDonald's and sporting a smile on his face. As soon as he saw Hansen and Keister, however, Murray's smile disappeared and he attempted to feign ignorance as he asked what was happening, not fully comprehending the situation. Despite some brief dialogue, Murray ultimately left while Keister remained silent throughout the interaction.
As Murray exited the premises, he was apprehended by the police and taken down to the ground, causing him to drop his McDonald's bag. He was audibly heard crying and being patted down, with Ocean County officers attempting to calm him down to no avail. Murray claimed he couldn't stop crying because he had to "get the truck back," suggesting he borrowed one of his own company trucks to commit his sexual assault. The sounds of his arrest and emotional outbursts were captured on the recordings from Keister's perspective, leading to him nervously anticipating being arrested.
Aftermath
After being arrested, Murray was initially charged with one count of attempted sexual assault, which was a second-degree felony, and one count of luring, which was also a second-degree felony. He could have faced a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison. In June 2008, a group of defense attorneys brought the relationship between the Prosecutor's Office and Dateline NBC's To Catch a Predator to the attention of a judge. Following this, Murray was presented with a plea deal and ultimately pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of attempting to endanger the welfare of a child, a third-degree felony. Although Murray was not sentenced to prison, he was ordered to serve lifetime parole and register as a sex offender for life.
2023 update
He tried contacting Murray through a phone numeber he found but could not get a hold of him. According to Chris, a third predator might have been coming into the house before being quickly arrested by the police while Keister and Murray were in the sting house. Although not specified, it is believed that third man was Sean Lee .
Trivia
If Murray stayed, this would have been the second instance of Chris interviewing two suspected predators simultaneously, the first time being with Safraz Khan and Yazan Asfour . However, it was the second time two suspected predators were simultaneously in the trap house, and the fourth time Chris had two people in the house at once after David Macek came with Sebastian Rodriguez , and Kanishk Lakanpal came with Pulkit Mathur . Macek and Lakhanpal were not charged and had no evidence of sexual intent, so they do not qualify as predators. State law only allows Level 2 and 3 (medium and high risk) sex offenders' information to be public knowledge.
