Reviewed sting-related legal outcome. Article expressly describes imposed indeterminate sentence, not merely statutory maximum exposure. No current custody inferred from historical release dates. The contemporaneous arraignment report identifies the other two single-count allegations, and the archived trial account reports their dismissal. The witness warrant concerned Chris Hansen, not a new offense by Lott.
Case narrative
Sting
Lott entered the motel room and parked his car in the parking lot. When he entered, the Michigan Ghost team swiftly arrested him. The cops placed him on the bed in the room and Chris Hansen entered to confront Lott. Hansen asked Lott about his plan, but Lott said nothing because he claimed he knew what it was. When Hansen further questioned Lott about what he thought the sting was, Lott smugly replied by revealing he knew it was a police sting.
Lott told Hansen he was going to Home Depot to buy paint. He then claimed he was only there to check her license and see if she was really underage. He would stay and watch her "squirt" if she were, but if not, he would leave. Hansen then asked Lott what he would do with the paint he is buying, and he replied that he would paint his home. Hansen then asked how Lott's wife would feel about this and he confirmed she wouldn't like it.
Hansen then asked if he had done such a thing before, which he denied. Hansen argued that was hard to believe. The cameras came out and Hansen revealed who he was. Hansen then asked which one he worked at and what the people at the prison, including his colleagues and the inmates there, would think. Lott replied that it wouldn't be good. Lott then said he learned his lesson and was led by the cops out of the motel room.
Lott was charged with three separate felonies: child-abusive sexual activity, accosting a child for immoral purposes, and using the internet to communicate with another to commit a crime.
Trial
Lott initially pleaded not guilty to his crimes. Therefore, a trial was held. Ironically, the court ordered Chris Hansen to come and give his footage of Lott at the sting. However, there was a misunderstanding, and Hansen did not show up. Hansen was then promptly arrested for evicting court. However, all the charges were later dropped against Hansen.
Lott, on the other hand, eventually decided to plead guilty as the trial was still pending in May 2022 to Child Sexually Abusive Activity, to one count of child-abusive sexual activity. The other two charges were dropped.
Right before his sentencing, when Lott was asked what he thought of all this, he said, "There is no excuse for what I did. I was wrong; it is unforgivable. I am sorry to my family and my wife, and I was selfish." He was trying to express remorse, and his lawyer argued that he had never been into drugs or alcohol or committed crimes before.
Lott is that I don't know how much insight that you have into what you have done." The judge then said, "So what is left for the court is a sentence that will send a message to the community that this is not something we can stand for." "The court believes your sentence be the highest amongst the guidelines range available."
Lott was, therefore, given the maximum sentence for being in a position of trust and authority; twenty-five months in prison with a maximum of two-hundred and forty months, and he had to register as a sex offender once released, as well as be put on parole.
Aftermath
Lott was paroled in May 2024, is on supervised release until May of 2026, and has been placed on the Michigan sex offender registry.
