Case narrative

Sting

On the day of his arrest, Malik jumped on a train and walked two miles with a laptop that had porn on it. Despite getting lost, he eventually found the beach next to the sting house where he met the decoy , Casey Mauro. Unlike many of the predators, he repeated his disturbing plans almost word for word with the girl face to face, although he promised he wouldn't rape her. When Chris Hansen came walking up the dune, all those plans were shot. Malik seemed more annoyed than worried that he had been interrupted while meeting what he believed to be a prepubescent girl home alone.

Malik would make the excuse that the only reason he came was that he liked to travel and he wasn't going to do anything, despite seconds earlier expressing to Casey a desire for marathon sex. He immediately got caught in a lie when asked his age and answered "seventeen", but couldn't do the math to subtract seventeen from 2007 (when the sting happened), or to add ten to his year of birth when his alleged age is an easy ten years difference. Malik admitted his real age, with Hansen revealing he already knew Malik's real age. Malik nervously chuckled and claimed that he didn't want to get the girl in trouble before immediately admitting he was also worried about getting himself in trouble.

Malik tried to deny his intentions on having sex with the girl, with Hansen reiterating that Malik had at least ten minutes to tell the decoy face to face he didn't want to do anything but instead went on to detail his sexual plans. Malik denied wanting to rape or kill the girl, referring to himself as "not a bad person." Similar to Vaikunth Soundarajan (who claimed he didn't know sex with a thirteen-year-old was illegal), he tried to feign ignorance about not knowing that sex with a minor is rape. After being told he was part of a Dateline investigation, Malik had the audacity to ask Hansen to give him a ride home or call him a cab, being refused both times. He attempted to leave the area but was promptly arrested by the Ocean County Sheriff's Department.

2023 update

In 2023, TCaP YouTuber The Moast Worst did an investigation into Malik's activities post-Dateline. With help from Joey, he was able to find out Malik is now a rapper who goes under the stage name "Leaky Washington", even rapping about his exposure on NBC at one point about how he's "one of those n****s whose dreams got shattered." A few photographs of Malik have surfaced alongside this update video, showing that he hasn't aged especially poorly since his time on television.

2022 update

When Chris did an update on Mailk for his Predators I've Caught podcast, he revealed that, while he hadn't heard back from Malik after reaching out, he hadn't reoffended as far as Hansen's team could tell (an incorrect assertion on their part) and that he really wasn't sure what Malik was up to.

Trivia

Both Washington's name (variously spelled "Malik" or "Malic") and his year of birth (reported to be either 1979 or 1980) are technically in dispute, though his New Jersey State Prison identification page, likely the most accurate source especially given his active (as of August 2026) incarceration, gives his birth year as 1979 and lists his name as Malic with "Malik Washington" listed as an alias.
