Case narrative

Confrontation with Chris Hansen

It wasn't until Del Harvey yelled out "It's Lee Greer!" that they finally knew who they were dealing with. When she asked what he had brought, Greer responded that he had a double cheeseburger with no pickles, but mentioned that the fries he brought might be cold and that he never received the sodas he ordered. As the decoy told him to wait for her, Hansen revealed himself to Greer instead of a real child. Upon meeting Hansen, Greer immediately asked who he was, but received no answer in return. Hansen then asked Greer who he was and why he was there. Greer replied that he came to "visit a friend off the net" named "Sammie". When asked about her age, Greer initially claimed to believe that she was 18 or older due to her appearance and behavior. However, when Hansen informed him that he knew he was lying, Greer admitted that the decoy was actually 13 years old. Greer was asked why he thought it was acceptable to visit a young child home alone at his age, and he responded that it was due to "stupidity".

Hansen then presented a picture of Greer's genitalia that he had sent to the decoy. Greer once again attributed his behavior to "stupidity" and the decoy's request to see it. He eventually confessed that he was married and did not want his wife to find out. Hansen asked Greer if he had brought any condoms. Greer admitted to having some but explained that they were always in his car due to disease concerns. He also mentioned that the car he arrived in was rented. Greer claimed that he had rented a hotel room and told the decoy that he wouldn't spend the night. He added that he wore his shorts twice as they were not dirty. In response, Hansen revealed that he looked like he was ready to spend the night due to bringing condoms, food, and sleepwear. Hansen then disclosed his identity, causing the cameras to come out. Greer murmured "oh no" and covered his face with his hand. Hansen informed Greer that everything he had said was recorded on camera and that he was free to leave. Greer stood up, grabbed his fast food, and asked if he would be featured on television. Hansen replied that they had not yet decided whom to air. Greer reiterated his desire to keep the incident from his wife. Hansen gave the same response, causing Greer to express gratitude and apologize. After Greer left the sting house, he was tackled to the ground by Fort Myers police, and he repeatedly cried out "Oh, Lord!" as they handcuffed him.

Aftermath

After his arrest, Greer was charged with a felony count of attempted lewd or lascivious battery with a victim 12-15 years old. Joseph Viacava, the defense attorney for Greer, acknowledged that the Dateline shows had a positive impact on raising awareness about online predators. He believed that the national exposure had a significant effect in deterring people from engaging in such activities. He further contended that it may be difficult for the state to prove that these conversations were with an actual child.

On March 1, 2007, Greer was convicted and found guilty against the single felony charge he was facing. In April 2007, Greer was sentenced to 21 months in prison, three years of probation, and was required to register as a sex offender. Greer was designated as a tier three sex offender in Arkansas, meaning he has a high risk of reoffending and has to update his status with law enforcement every 90 days for the rest of his life. He was convicted on September 10, 2007, on felony Internet Stalking after being accused of engaging in sexually explicit conversations and soliciting a 14-year-old girl online. Vince acknowledged that he had also engaged in sexual conversations with two other girls aged between 14-15 years on the internet. As a result, he was classified as a tier two sex offender, which means a moderate risk of reoffending, and is obligated to update his status with law enforcement every six months for 25 years.
