Reviewed sting-related legal outcome. Do not replace the unusual explicitly reported term with a rounded duration; projected release and historical custody location are not current status. FDC sentence date November 29, 2023 conflicts with the narrative December 27 date; agency date retained pending judgment review. FDC repeats two travel-description rows; no duplicate charge/count is inferred. The five-year attempted-battery term is not added to the longer term.
Case narrative
Sting
Juanmiguel Diaz was arrested after he arrived to the hotel where the sting was planned, taken to the police station, and placed in a room to be interviewed by Chris Hansen. Diaz claimed that he initially declined the offer to rape a child but "couldn't get it out of his mind" while he was working. He stated, however, that he was only thinking about it because it "pissed [him] off beyond belief." When asked if he had ever tried to meet with a minor for sex before, Diaz stated that he had not and even reported another profile a couple years before that had a similar circumstance. Diaz claimed that some of the texts never made it to his phone, conveniently including the one where the decoy said that she was fourteen.
When asked why he wanted the girl to send him a picture with the current date, Diaz stated, "To make sure that this was actually a little girl that was actually trying to do something, and I wanted to stop it." Diaz claimed that his plan was to gather as much evidence as he could, including child pornography, by leading the mother and daughter on as if he was interested. Then, once he could arrive and confirm it was real through his own detective work, he planned to report the incident to the police. Although his plan was fool-proof and brilliant, Diaz stated that it was "ret*rded" and "halfcocked" in hindsight. Chris responded by saying that it "sounds like it was full-cocked to me."
Hmm." When asked about the various positions Diaz wanted to have sex in, Diaz responded that he was simply trying to keep the girl's attention and keep her interested until he could have a conversation with her mother later that night.

Diaz was released after paying a $26,000 bond. Diaz later accepted a plea agreement whereby the third charge was dropped and he pled no contest to the other three. He was sentenced on December 27, 2023 to 63 months and 9 days with the Florida Department of Corrections and with 5 days of credit for time served. Additionally, after his release he will be a registered sex offender and have an additional 5 years of probation.
