Case narrative
Interview with Chris Hansen
Josh Colon being interviewed by Hansen, and the decoy aggressively taking his keys off the table.
Colon drove over fifty miles in the rain from his home in Glendale, New York to the sting house in Fairfield, Connecticut. Upon reaching the arranged location, instead of meeting an actual child, a nineteen-year-old decoy, dubbed Nervous Nellie/Nelly , awaited him. Colon, carrying an overnight bag, entered the sting house and locked the door behind him. Curious, she asked about any items he brought for her. In response, he explained that he only brought dinner for himself due to time constraints before leaving. Colon then requested to use the bathroom and remarked that the decoy appeared even more attractive in person than in her online9th pictures. Guiding Colon to the bathroom, the decoy subtly signaled to switch positions with Chris Hansen . Hansen directed Colon to take a seat, prompting a hesitant "Oh shit..." from Colon as he put his hands up and withdrew his phone from his pocket. Admitting to recognizing Hansen from his shows on sexual predators, Colon's car alarm suddenly blared. Hansen asked about the keys, leading Colon to retrieve them from his pockets and silence the alarm.
Once the commotion subsided, Hansen questioned the number of times he had seen the show, to which Colon stated it had been a while since he had last watched the shows. Hansen then informed Colon that they had resumed filming, and he happened to be one of the first predators they had caught. As Hansen further questioned him, Colon admitted to meeting the decoy online and acknowledged her age, confessing that she was 12. He also admitted to bringing clothes, indicating his intent to spend the night. Under Hansen's persistent questioning about his plans, Colon reluctantly admitted that he had the intention of engaging in sex with the girl. Hansen, visibly disgusted, asked Colon why he would even say that to a 12-year-old.Hansen proceeded to ask Colon how he would feel if a grown man did to one of his nieces and nephews what he had attempted with the decoy. Colon admitted he wouldn't like it, leading Hansen to question why he would engage in grooming a child. Colon responded by saying he didn't want to talk anymore. Hansen then asked if he had any condoms, to which Colon admitted to having brought them in the bag, along with the previously mentioned clothes and toothbrush. When Hansen brought up the term "Papi," Colon once again refused to provide any further information. Hansen pressed further, making Colon state that it was "Latin slang."
Colon, revealing his occupation as a plumber and stating that he earned a good income, admitted that he that he had "no choice but to go to jail" and "deserved" it when questioned about what should happen to him. As Hansen probed for additional insights, Colon refused to provide further details, expressing a sense of resignation about his situation. Regarding his car, Colon admitted to sharing it with his twin brother and suggested that his brother "wouldn't be happy" upon learning of his circumstances. Colon also mentioned the death of his mother and that his father in Manhattan. Upon Hansen revealing his identity, the camera crew emerged. Colon asked to use the bathroom before leaving, but was advised by Hansen that it would be best to leave. Collecting his phone and heading toward the garage, Colon exited through the door. As he exited, law enforcement officers confronted him, causing him to drop his phone on the floor and be placed under arrest.
Police interview
After his processing, Colon accepted and interview with the police. In the interrogation room, as he enjoyed his earlier takeout food, investigators questioned him about his purpose in Fairfield. Colon openly confessed that he had come to the area to "meet a young girl," and said that she was 12. When asked about the onset of their communication, Colon hesitated, expressing concerns about self-incrimination. The investigators tried to reassure him that sharing his perspective could help them comprehend his situation. Once again, Colon admitted that he had joined the Link app with the explicit purpose of meeting a young girl, underscoring that he knew she was 12 years old. He also reiterated his preference for dating people "12 and up." When probed about the transition of their conversation to a sexual nature, Colon claimed it "just came up" and attributed it to being on his mind. He openly acknowledged developing a sexual attraction as their communication progressed. The investigators delved into the timeframe of his last contact with an underage person, to which Colon vaguely responded that it had been a "while." However, he admitted to avoiding online meetings out of fear of appearing on Hansen's show. Regarding his intentions with the girl, Colon initially mentioned just wanting to "hang out," but eventually, he confessed to planning sexual activity. He further disclosed his manipulative tactics, admitting to telling her he loved her to "pull" her in. Colon then admitted to engaging in sexual relations with a 15-year-old boy named "David" from Long Island, whom he had met online a few months prior. Toward the end of the interview, the investigators inquired about any images or videos of children in his phone, and Colon admitted to having some of both boys and girls.
Aftermath
After his arrest, Colon was originally charged with one felony count of criminal attempted first degree sexual assault, one felony count of attempted risk of injury to a minor, and one felony count of enticing a minor in an obscene performance. During his police interview, the investigators told Colon he would be held on $750,000 bail but it was eventually lowered down to $125,000, causing him to bail out. Colon ended up pleading guilty to an amended charge of criminal attempted second-degree sexual assault, one felony count of attempted risk of injury to a minor, and one felony count of enticing a minor in an obscene performance. In late 2016, Colon was sentenced to seven years in prison which would be suspended after he served three years. He was also sentenced to ten years of probation and had to register as a sex offender for ten years. In September 2020, Colon was arrested for violating his probation and was sentenced to six months in jail.
2022 update
In 2022, Hansen made a Predator's I've Caught Podcast episode dedicated to Colon. Although the voice on the other end of the call sounded suspiciously like Colon, they claimed it wasn't him and swiftly hung up.
