Case narrative
Biography
At the time of the sting, Joseph John Wunderler was a U.S. Army Sergeant stationed at Fort Belvoir, assigned to the Intelligence and Security Command (INSCOM), finishing 10 years of service.
Sting
On August 19, 2005, Joe drove to the sting house in Herndon, Virginia. When Joe arrived, he started looking for the dog in the kitchen while waiting for the decoy to descend. His search was interrupted when Chris Hansen came out to confront him. When told to sit down, Joe did so and then quickly developed a nervous twitch where he rapidly sniffed and hummed. He claimed that he only stopped by to "talk." Chris stated that he appeared anxious for someone who was just coming over to talk. Joe retorted that he has nervousness on a regular basis. When asked how old the girl he had come to visit was, Joe first said he didn't know but later changed his story to say he saw a fourteen-year-old girl after Chris didn't believe him.
He says he never had intercourse with any of the women he met online; instead, they would just talking. He claimed that he was seeing a doctor. Chris retorted that it didn't seem to work. Joe contended that at that point, he began speaking to them. Chris said that Joe had mentioned having sex acts with the dog. Joe maintained he had repulsive fetishes that he was aware were wrong, and it was one of the reasons he was attempting to get "help." When Chris asked if he was going to state that it was his very first time doing it, Joe claimed that it was his first time. Chris later questioned Joe about why he considered it was right for an adult man to visit a fourteen-year-old girl home alone, even if he was only there to "talk." Joe replied that he "didn't think about it" at the time.
Chris declared that he still arrived anyway. Joe insisted that nothing would be done and that it was all "talk." Joe said he knew exactly what Chris was doing and what was going on. Because Joe thought Chris was in law enforcement, he tried to negotiate a deal to participate in the investigation so he could be let go and not get on trouble. Chris clarified to him that he wasn't from law enforcement and that he stepped into a Dateline sting. The cameras emerged and Chris acknowledged who he was. Joe got up from the stool and left the sting house. Since this was before the police were involved, he wasn't arrested right away.
2023 update
Chris and his crew flew out to the part of the States the couple live in to hopefully chase up the interview, but were unable to find them. Chris' logical conclusion is that they are no longer interested in doing the interview, but he is still open to speaking with Joe.
2022 update
Chris reached out to Joe and had a very brief exchange with him. It went as follows:
Chris - "Hey Joe, it's Chris Hansen. How are you today?"
Chris - "Joe, I do a follow-up series of podcasts-"
Chris immediately called Joe back, and their next exchange was even shorter than their first:
Joe - "I have nothing to say to you, stop calling me!"
Chris also revealed some disturbing information about Joe, such as accusations of sexual misconduct from when he was as young as 10-years-old.
Trivia
Joe is hilariously wearing a shirt with a dog on it during his interview. Indicating there must have been more dialogue regarding Chris Hansen and Joe, regarding him being in the millitary, which other than those two lines has never been publicly seen.
