Case narrative
Biography
Morningstar was once a police officer, graduating from the academy in Detroit before transferring to Millington for six years in the late 1990s and early 2000s. He was promoted to sergeant in 2014.
Sting
When Morningstar got to the sting house, locking the door behind him, he was greeted by the decoy girl who told him that she had not urinated recently. Morningstar confirmed that he liked to be urinated on when asked by the decoy. He asked her where she wanted to go, which she used as the time to leave and have Chris Hansen come out.
Upon Chris entering the room, Morningstar laughed and said that he "knew this was going to happen." Morningstar told Chris that he was on his way to help his father with a tree, and knew that he "was going to get sucked into this." Despite Chris not having mentioned the decoy's age yet, Morningstar volunteered that he "didn't catch when she said fifteen." He stated that he had been having trouble at home, causing him to seek out sex. He blamed his wife for not "being into anything," referring to his kinks, and for not giving him enough attention. Morningstar denied having the intent to have sex with a minor girl.
When being arrested by deputies, Morningstar requested that he be written an appearance ticket instead of being taken to the jail.
Aftermath
Child Sexually Abusive Activity Using a Computer to Commit a Crime Accosting a Child for Immoral Purposes
Morningstar accepted a plea deal offered on the day of his trial August 12, 2025. He pled guilty to use of a computer to commit a crime in exchange for the dropping of the charges for child sexually abusive activity and accosting a child for immoral purposes.
In October 2025, he was sentenced to 45 days in jail with five years of probation. He must also register as a sex offender for 25 years, which will likely last Morningstar the rest of his life.
