Case narrative

Biography

Jaswinder resided in San Jose, California before being involved in the sting.

Sting and Arrest

On August 26th, 2006, Jaswinder arrived and parked his black Nissan into the garage of the sting house. Jaswinder approached the backyard and remarked the decoy's home. He then attempted to stop the decoy from going behind the room divider to "change" by holding out his arms for a hug. When she declined, he explained that it was "just a hug". Chris Hansen comes out and sarcastically asks "No hug for me?" As Chris tells Jaswinder to take a seat, he claims to be aware of what is was happening and enquired as to whether he would face arrest.

Jaswinder insisted he wasn't there for sex and that he believed the girl to be 19 years old. Chris pointed out that he had the chatlongs and that the girl said she was 13 twice. Jaswinder replys, "Wow. Are you kidding?" Chris reveals to him that the girl informed him that she was 13 as soon as the conversation began. He then makes another excuse to explain his conversation with the decoy by claiming that he was extremely intoxicated and didn't notice her age. Chris jokingly says Jaswinder "didn't even notice she was 13."

When Chris asked Jaswinder how old he was, he claimed to be 28 when he was actually 30. Jaswinder requested Chris if he could turn off the cameras, to which he immediately replied he couldn't. He then admits to Chris that he had seen Dateline before and begged to be arrested several times, suggesting that he could explain his way out of the situation to the cops. When Chris tells him who he is and is exposed on national television. Jaswinder points to his clothes and tries to claim that he would never rape a child because he is "very professional." Knowing he is going to be arrested, Jaswinder puts his hands up and walks out of the sting house. He is then arrested by the Petaluma Police Department and Sonoma County Sheriff's Office.

Aftermath

Jaswinder was taken to a temporary booking station in an airport, photographed, and read his rights before being brought in for questioning. He repeated the same excuses he gave Chris to the investigator and inquired as to why he was being arrested when he hadn't "really done anything." The investigator discusses that he came to rape a child but that they were able to stop him from doing it. Jaswinder asserted that it was over and that he should be freed from custody. The investigator retorted that he would go find another child to rape and that it was his duty to keep his community safe. Jaswinder tried something similar that many other predators caught in the sting did. Because Petaluma is in Silicon Valley, where the average yearly salary exceeds $100,000, many predators hired expensive or celebrity lawyers. When he hired an expensive lawyer, Jaswinder tried to prolong his case in the hopes of being acquitted, having the charges dropped, or having the charges reduced to a misdemeanor. Jaswinder's lawyer frequently sat in on fellow child predator Maurice Wolin 's high-profile court appearances, attempting to imitate Wolin's tactics.

Jaswinder's lawyer discovered Michael Wilusz 's acquittal while looking at other cases in which Perverted Justice had been involved. She discovered how the defense lawyer in that case questioned Perverted Justice's procedures for acquiring evidence, which resulted in a subpoena for their hard drives. Perverted Justice refused to comply with the request, which ultimately contributed to his client's acquittal. The attorney for Jaswinder made the same effort on behalf of his client. After years of trying to fight the case, in December 2010, Jaswinder pleaded guilty to a felony count of attempted lewd or lascivious acts with a child under the age of 14. While he avoided jail time, he was given lifetime registration as a sex offender and was on probation until the end of 2013. He was able to successfully change his name to Jesse Singh in November 2006.

2023 update

That same day, he was sentenced to 40 days in the county jail, was put on probation for one year, and had to serve 312 hours of community service.
