2024 update
Joey found a number associated with Mitchell and called it. Mitchell texted Joey , pretending to be Kevin Westerbeck . He tried to call him back several times, but in an attempt not to scare Mitchell off, he stuck to texting and pretended he was looking for Mitchell's roommate, Joe, who is also a registered sex offender. According to a police report, Mitchell and Joe had been involved in two separate police calls over nasty arguments, one of which was due to Mitchell being concerned Joe wasn't wearing enough warm clothing in the winter. When Joey and Mitchell spoke on the phone, Mitchell remained nervous about who he was talking to, claiming that he hadn't seen Joe in over a year.
When Chris Hansen contacted Mitchell for his podcast, Mitchell answered the phone despite having been asleep. Not initially recognizing Hansen's name or voice, Hansen told Mitchell why he was calling and who he was, and after some hesitation, Mitchell claimed that he was retired and successful. While acknowledging his crimes, he expressed no interest in speaking to Hansen about his conviction or charges before telling him to find someone else to talk to and hanging up. According to public records, Hansen ran a background check and discovered Mitchell is not known to have reoffended since 2006.
