Biography
He was a recent immigrant to the United States.
Sting and arrest
When Kalantari arrived at the sting house, he extended his hand to shake the decoy's. She gave it to him grudgingly and he tried to kiss her forcibly. Before things grew worse, Chris Hansen quickly entered the room, shook Farzad's hand, and motioned for him to take a seat. Farzad replied that the girl was fourteen when asked about her age. Farzad seemed genuinely surprised due to getting the decoys he was talking to mixed up. He insisted he wasn't there for sex but rather to help the girl with her education.
Chris revealed to Kalantari that he was aware that prior to arriving at the sting house, he had communicated with another decoy who was posing as a girl under the age of fourteen. When confronted about his "dodgy" behaviour (with Kalantari initially not understanding what "dodgy" meant), Hansen asked Kalantari why he should believe anything he says since he only tells the truth after the evidence against him is presented. Farzad maintained he was only having a conversation with her and wanted to make sure she did good in her education. Kalantari then claimed to be from Austria and that he had poor English language skills. And while technically, it is true Kalantari was born in Austria, he is not an Austrian citizen as merely being born in the country is not the basis for citizenship like it is in the U.S.. Chris demonstrated the conversation logs to Kalantari and remarked on how he groomed a young girl while speaking English perfectly fine.
When asked if he brought condoms, Kalantari denied doing so, even asking Chris if he wanted to check his car. When Chris formally introduced himself, Kalantari inquired as to whether he was a police officer.
Aftermath
While at the booking station, Kalantari became distraught and said, "May be kill myself. Maybe." When interrogated, he revealed he had in fact brought condoms. He would later plead guilty to a felony charge of attempted lewd or lascivious acts with a child under 14 years of age. He was sentenced to three years of probation, registration as a sex offender, and sixty days of Caltrans cleanup.
2024 update
Chris Hansen found out through a background check that shortly after he finished his punishment, Kalantari was deported.
