Case narrative

Background

He claimed that because of his lack of hair, he was constantly bullied for years. This prompted him to go online to start a fundraiser for a hair transplant.

Police Interview

During his police questioning, Tiriolo admitted to having used Badoo multiple times, even meeting someone through the platform previously. However, he explained feeling too "nervous" to engage in such encounters again. Tiriolo recounted that the decoy, despite confessing to being thirteen, made a joke about being thirty-seven. He said that it made him uncomfortable, deeming it not "funny" and admitting to being "skittish." Tiriolo stated that his suspicions arose when the decoy mentioned being unable to go to the casino and was always hanging around her dad's friends. Acknowledging his reluctance to go to the sting house out of fear of encountering Hansen, Tiriolo claimed that the decoy attempted to "persuade" him to enter, but he resisted, stating he told her it was a "bad idea."

He stressed that he had no intention of engaging in any sexual activity with her and believed she was "joking" about being thirteen. Tiriolo admitted to seeing the decoy at the door, engaging in small talk, and then deciding to drive off. Tiriolo asserted that he couldn't accurately determine the decoy's age and left the sting house because "something didn't seem right." Acknowledging driving around for twenty to thirty minutes, contemplating going home, he admitted to passing the sting house three times. Reiterating his doubts in her being thirteen, Tiriolo claimed she told him she was actually in her twenties, considering her teen age a "joke." He disclosed a prior arrest for breach of peace and trespassing, along with his occupations as a screen printer and construction worker, emphasizing his role as a father to a three-year-old daughter. When questioned about his motive for going to the sting house, Tiriolo admitted to having "no life" but clarified he harbored no intention of "hurting a little girl."

Insisting he believed the girl was "joking" about being thirteen and assumed she was twenty, investigators expressed skepticism about a twenty-year-old woman pretending to be a teenager. Tiriolo confessed to talking to the decoy over the phone, describing it as sounding "fake" and resembling a computer-generated voice. He admitted going to the sting house out of "pure stupidity." When questioned about what he would do if the decoy got in his car, Tiriolo asserted that he would ask her to leave. He further claimed that engaging in sexual activities wasn't a possibility for him due to his struggle with erectile dysfunction. The investigators, however, highlighted the presence of condoms in his car despite his earlier assertion that he couldn't engage in sexual activities. In response, Tiriolo claimed ignorance about the duration the condoms had been there and attributed it to an increase in his anxiety medication, which he believed had adversely affected his sex drive.

Aftermath

After his arrest, Tiriolo was originally charged with one felony count of criminal attempted second degree sexual assault, one felony count of attempted risk of injury to a minor, and one felony count of enticing a minor in an obscene performance. Because Tiriolo never sent anything too sexually graphic to the decoy, he was found guilty on a single felony count of attempted risk of injury to a minor while the other two felonies were dropped. On January 8, 2016, Tiriolo was sentenced to a suspended ten-year prison sentence and three years of probation. His probation ended in 2018 and he is still believed to work as a screen printer.

2023 update

When Tiriolo answered, he claimed the connection wasn't good and he was unable to hear Hansen clearly. Hansen confirmed this, stating that the audio from Tiriolo's end sounded choppy. Later that day, Hansen was contacted by Tiriolo's lawyer, and was told that he would pass along Hansen's message and see if Tiriolo would be interested in an interview.
