Reviewed sting-related legal outcome. No jail term invented. Speculative allegations in Trivia excluded. The signed account published January 7, 2013 (originally posted June 2012) states attempted lewd act and no-contest plea. It says six months Caltrans, whereas the archive says sixty hours community service; neither figure is treated as imprisonment and the discrepancy remains unresolved.
Case narrative
Sting
Arriving at the house, Corey attempted to enter through the front door, only for the decoy to come out and lure him around the side of the house. He waffled between entering the house and leaving, asking the girl what she had been doing. She replied she had simply been talking online, which seemed to arouse Corey's suspicion. When the decoy asked him if he was coming inside, Corey claimed he was, "tryin' not to think about this," as well as blaming his reluctance on being paranoid. After a bit more hesitation, finally entered the house and almost immediately spotted the camera crew in the backyard through a window, which prompted Chris Hansen to come out. Corey claimed he "wasn't planning on any of this," but Hansen still told him to sit down.
Corey the claimed he knew what was going on and attempted to leave, but changed his mind and stayed after spotting the policemen circling the house outside. He claimed his life was now over, stating that he did not want "any of this" to happen. As soon as Corey claimed he had never done such a thing before, Hansen read out load Corey's opening line, with Corey immediately trying to defend his actions by saying he made resistant statements about her age, which Hansen immediately disputed by reading the exact quote; "I never knew a young female like yourself would like that." Corey stood up and began to freak out, believing Hansen was arresting him. Hansen denied this, but Corey pointed out that the police outside were arresting him. Hansen claimed he was simply trying to understand what brought Corey to the house, prompting Corey to declare he had done nothing wrong. He didn't reveal his age when asked by Hansen.
While he admitted to transmitting it and the act of doing so to a twelve-year-old being wrong, Corey still maintained it was a fake picture. When asked if he was indeed blaming the victim, Corey tried to find an unearned middle ground, claiming it wasn't his fault or the girl's, although he didn't have a good reason to back up his argument. Hansen rightfully pointed out Corey kept engaging. When Hansen frustrated asked why Corey was at the house, Corey claimed he was only stopping by on his way to get cigarettes and fill up hid quarter full tank with more gas. He claimed he had only stopped by to "at least meet her." Hansen pointed out how Corey was worried it was a set-up, he knew it was wrong, but he still chose to come over. Corey didn't have a good answer for Hansen, denying he has a compulsion and that he had ever done it before. When further confronted on his excuses, he stuck to his gas and cigarettes excuse, adding fishing on top of it. He acknowledge that it was unlikely they sold cigarettes or gas at the house and that it was wrong for him to even stop by.
Corey completely fell into his mental breakdown, claiming that the decoy's profile claimed she was one-hundred and two. Corey started to blame Yahoo for letting dishonest people online, with Hansen sarcastically asking Corey if he thought he was coming to the house to sexually please a woman over a hundred years of age, which Corey denied. Corey stuck to his fishing excuse, to which Chris responded by saying, "Sounds like what you were fishing for was sex with a twelve year old girl!" Corey stuck to his excuse, although when Hansen tried to further confront him on it, Corey asked who he was, leading to Hansen revealing his identity and the camera crew coming out. Corey lowered his sunglasses and eventually resigned to the fact that he would be arrested, knowing police were outside waiting to apprehend him. He claimed he felt sick to the point he would throw up. He did what he could to avoid leaving the house, even kicking back on the armchair and drinking the trap fruit punch. Finally, Corey gave in to the inevitable and went outside, being arrested with no resistance.
Aftermath
Like many of the Long Beach arrests, Edgar escaped jail time and was given three years probation, sixty hours of community service, one year of sex offender counselling, and lifetime registration as a sex offender.
In 2012, Corey would write an open letter post-arrest on the internet explaining his actions. He went on to explain that he was in the sting house and spoke to Chris for about ten minutes after aimlessly pondering between going in or leaving for quite a while. He warned people against making the same mistake he did before signing off. He also spelt his name as “Cory” in the letter despite his rap sheet and sex offender registry profile showing his name as “Corey."
Edgar refusing to leave the house post exposure.
Trivia
Although a partial uncut tape, an uncut clip (both from the MSNBC subscription service), and an uncut edit utilising the tape, clip, and his televised interview all exist, Corey's full uncut interview with Hansen has never been found, and the exact order their conversation took place in remains unknown. The editing for both his television segment and the partially uncut tape is particularly choppy, with several continuity and audio errors. Edgar's risk assessment as a sex offender has not yet been complete.
