At the time of the sting, Thompson lived in or near Birmingham, Alabama.

Thompson drove by the sting house before eventually parking on the street. He left the car running when he went to enter the house. After being greeted by the decoys inside, Thompson gave a hug to the decoy playing the minor niece. As Chris Hansen came out to confront him, Thompson ran out of the front door and to his running car. Deputies could not stop him in time, and Thompson drove off. Deputies were able to pull Thompson over several miles down the road. A search of Thompson's vehicle recovered two firearms and multiple condoms. Thompson protested to the cameras filming him because he was a self-proclaimed "public figure." He would repeat this objection throughout the interview.

Thompson adamantly claimed that he did not have any intention of having sex with a fifteen-year-old. Instead, he claimed that he only wanted to meet his "friend," the aunt. However, Chris asked Thompson where the number fifteen even came from, because no person had mentioned the decoy's age except for Thompson. Thompson blamed others in the room for bringing up the age first. He denied that it meant anything related to sex. Thompson also denied hugging the decoy, saying anything sexual, discussing price and money, and communicating with anyone online, although he did admit to meeting the aunt online. He also claimed to have met the aunt in real life before coming to the sting house.
