Case narrative

Biography

According to Bernard, he is bisexual or bi-curious. He is an avid fisherman.

Sting

After arriving to the apartment complex where the sting was set up, Bernard sprinted up the stairs to meet the decoy. Bernard told the decoy, "I figured if I'd seen a d*** picture... when you said fourteen... well, I just figured that, you know, covers my ass." The decoy, acting as a fourteen-year-old boy, very obviously looked like an adult male with defined muscles, but this did not make Bernard suspicious.

When Chris Hansen came out, Bernard exclaimed, "Aww sh**!" At this point, Bernard noticed the cameras set up around the room. Bernard told Chris that he "nevuh met a minuh (in Cajun accent)." Bernard asked if he was free to go if he decided to not answer any questions, giving Chris his assurance that "this'll nevuh happen again." Chris continued to ask questions and pivoted the topic. Bernard stated that he would be willing to answer questions if the cameras did not record him. Chris told Bernard that he could not stop filming for safety reasons. Bernard then asked, "Oh, so yow an officuh, or are yow a television host?" Chris dodged the question.

Bernard denied talking about anal sex because he was new to having sex with men and had not done that before. Chris asked if having sex with the boy was a fantasy of Bernard's, which Bernard assented that it was. Bernard told Chris, "You could gottuh my house and look on my computuhs, I don't even look at chil' porwun. That's what sucks!" Bernard agreed that he knew the decoy's age and knew that it was illegal to meet him for sex. When asked what he would have done had it not been a sting, Bernard responded that he would have gone "with the flow" and hopefully not had sex with the boy.

Bernard stated that his preferred outcome for this situation would be him being let go with a warning and for someone to monitor him. He assured Chris that he would not do the same thing again. He also told Chris that the only reason he did it this time was because he had some extra time that day the situation "just fell in [his] lap." He immediately recognized that what he said did not sound good. Sheriff Jason Ard came out with the cameras to meet Bernard. Bernard attempted to shake Sheriff Ard's hand, but stopped after realizing that the Sheriff would probably not reciprocate given the circumstances.
